Andrea Merideth’s work interrogates the female experience through a feminist lens, reacting to misogyny and patriarchal domination. It speculates on the female response to subordination by men, and examines Merideth’s own experience, often reacting to current national or international events, or everyday, casual misogyny.
Female rage is represented in her work, and the expression of it confronts the audience with bold colour, often strong reds. The red represents the many facets of the female experience, and she uses this colour symbolism to depict a reaction to historical labels and stereotypical behaviours suggested by the patriarchal lens women are often viewed through. More recently, she has chosen to depict the aftermath and results felt by women on the receiving end of misogynistic behaviour.
Materiality is central to Merideth’s research, often through processes labelled as ‘women’s work’ or associated with women’s home crafts and hobbies. She desires to lift these processes from their historical devaluation and elevate them to a higher, modern esteem, using fibre and often combining this with other materials. Merideth feels it is appropriate to use disparaged home craft processes to depict female rage.
At the root of her research is a fear that the plight of women worldwide is worsening. The gains women have made in the last 100 years seems to be diminishing, as women worldwide lose agency over their bodies, their finances, their careers and their right to exist on their own terms without fear of physical or verbal assault. This fuels the artist’s female rage and that is a driving force behind her work.
Merideth is an interdisciplinary artist, born and raised on the Isle of Wight, currently working in Devon and Somerset, after having lived overseas for the majority of her adult life.
