Andrea Merideth’s work interrogates the female experience through a feminist lens, reacting to misogyny and patriarchal domination. It speculates on the female response to subordination by men, and examines Merideth’s own experience, often reacting to current events, or everyday, casual misogyny.
The expression of female rage confronts the audience with bold colour. She uses this colour symbolism to depict a reaction to historical labels and stereotypical behaviours suggested by the patriarchal lens women are often viewed through. She depicts the aftermath and results felt by women on the receiving end of misogynistic behaviour.
At the root of her research is a fear that the plight of women is worsening as women worldwide lose agency over their bodies, their finances, their careers and their right to exist on their own terms without fear of physical or verbal assault. This fuels the artist’s female rage.
